Music Team Training Resources

Music Team Training Resources

These are general training resources that the band might find valuable to watch. Rather than try to imitate all of the suggested techniques or philosophies, pick one or two and then come back and re-watch them when you're ready to work on something else!

General Band

#28 Monitoring Explained

Foldbacks vs Front of House - using the foldbacks.

#35 Who is the Audience?

Not a performance for the congregation, but worship for God

Vocals

#2 Vocalists: "Fly Fishing" for Harmony

Thinking about the best way to do harmonies.

#9 Vocalists: Creating Our Unified Voice

Thinking about how we approach singing, and our styles; and how to do vocals in a way that's most helpful for the congregation

#13 Vocalists: Melody & Harmony Emphasis

Where is the role of Melody and Harmony in a church band? Being deliberate in who is singing harmony to ensure we have enough melody?

#17 Vocalists: Getting Off The Microphone

Dropping all vocals is a technique we can use to invite the congregation to sing

#26 Vocalists: Consolidating the Melody

Easy to sing minor variations based of what we hear from different recordings or the sheet music. Singing the same notes at the same time is important.

#34 Vocalists: Microphone Technique

How to do a mic check, how to use different types of mics, mic handling.

Guitar

#6 Acoustic Guitar: Keys & Capos

Using a capo to make playing easier (I know it's for acoustic, but might be useful for electric too)

Has some advanced capo techniques that might inspire you!

#12 Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar & Keys: Who's Driving?

Thinking about which instrument has lead / playing in a way that compliments other instruments.

#27 Stringed Instruments: Tuning

Ensuring your instrument is in and stays in tune. Slightly more advanced: Proper maintenance

Acoustic Guitar

#33 Acoustic Guitar: Tone

How do you set your EQ (if you have one!)

Electric Guitar

#3 Electric Guitar: Amp Volume & Positioning

Electric Guitar - if using an amp and mic. (We currently go direct to desk, so not applicable)

#11 Electric Guitar: It's Not An Acoustic

Ways to play Electric that are different from acoustic - Noah, the main example of guitar for you in the band has been electric to date, so this might be helpful! He's got some pedals you might want to look into, but there's no expectation that you rock up tomorrow with a stack of them!

Bass Guitar

#5 Bass Guitar versus Keyboard

Relationship between the keys and the bass guitar

#15: Bass Guitar Register

4 octaves to play with, but being deliberate about where you play so you don't play in other instruments ranges.

#25 Bass Guitar: Note Length

What do you play rhythmically? When do you play something more driven, and when do you leave space? Why?

Piano / Keys

More than Music Mentor links

#5 Bass Guitar versus Keyboard

Relationship between the keys and the bass guitar

#12 Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar & Keys: Who's Driving?

Thinking about which instrument has lead / playing in a way that compliments other instruments.

#16 From Pianist To Keyboardist

A philosophical widening from Piano to Keys - what can you bring to the band that doesn't run over other instruments roles?

Simple rhythms to learn and build from when playing from chords:

Rhythms in 4:4 time

Rhythms in 3:4 time

Drums

#7 Drums: Keeping Solid Time

Using a metronome / click track / similar to set the beat

(Talks about using in-ear foldbacks which we don't have. )

#30 Solving Drum Volume Issues: Dynamic Control

Looking at ways to do dynamic control as a drummer - learning to play 'soft' through to 'loud'

#31 Solving Drum Volume Issues: Dynamic Control EXTRA!

Some of the thought process behind kit piece choice, stick/brush choice, etc

#32 Solving Drum Volume Issues: Drum & Cymbal Quality

Thinking about drum and cymbal quality.

Band Leader

#4 Assessing The Room Volume

Thinking about how the volume of the band in the room can effect congregational participation, ensuring that vocals have audio lead

#13 Vocalists: Melody & Harmony Emphasis

Ensuring the melody is above the harmony in the mix and enough vocalists are singing melody in a song

#22 Band/Audio Tech Communication

Communication between band and sound, using the sound desk operator as a sounding board for muso / vocals structure

#23 Band Positioning & Signals

Communication between leader and band. What can we develop that helps us signal well?

Tech Team

#4 Assessing The Room Volume

Thinking about the volume in the room and the effect it can have on the congregation - too loud or too soft both have a problem; thinking about appropriate balance between band and vocals (vocals above the band)

#13 Vocalists: Melody & Harmony Emphasis

Ensuring the melody is above the harmony in the mix

#22 Band/Audio Tech Communication

Communication between band and sound, how the Sound Desk operator can give feedback to the band
